Guitars Vs Amps

Guitars are cuddly, sexy things. You want to rub your hands all over them, caressing their necks.

It's easy to forget that they come from trees in the forest, not from a man and a woman, like you and I.

The guitar is the perfect mate. It gives back whatever you put in. Even if you just look at it, like a work of art.

Not so with amps. Amps are sterile, mechanical, soulless beings. They're like robots. They exist only to serve the guitar.

You can fall asleep with a guitar in your arms. In younger days, I confess to waking up with a strange guitar next to me.

"Do I know you? What happened last night? I realize this is kind of awkward. Here, let me put you back in your case."

I'd never want to wake up next to an amp.

A guitar has human qualities. A neck, head (which we call headstock) and body. The amp is pure machine. Knobs, lights, casing.

Sorry amps. You're just not as sexy as guitars.

Hey, you know, whatever happens in Canada.....

I wonder if the same is true for violins?? Now I'm going to go home tonight and stare at mine until we're both uncomfortable.

Nevertheless, I like amps, too. You don't lay your hands on them as you would on a guitar but what's a guitar without a great amp? How would Testament sound if you couldn't turn your amp on 10 but would have to play without anything plugged?

Admittedly, I don't know all that much about the guitar, but I'm willing to bet that my cello could beat out your guitar for sexiness. Tall, dark, and handsome... You have to hold it between your legs to play it... and the sounds it makes... bellissimo! Plus, no amp required :)

Just enjoyed reading this nice short story. I love the photo very much.
Did you take it by yourself?
I've never slept with my guitar, Perez...

All strings instruments are great: the banjo, the mandolin, the piano, the guitar.

The guitar speaks. yes, she speaks. She speaks aggressively, she speaks with anger and soft spoken. She talks about love, hate, of anger, death, life, passion. She speaks English, French, Indian, Spanish, German, she also speaks the other language already forgotten by the world today. The human qualities that it has not only body and arms, but because they often speak things what we don´t achieve alone talk.

Who´s never compose one song when stay sad? Who´s never think in to give immortality for a feeling with one song ? Because this is, we love guitars !!!!

I remember, when I was child, with 5 or 6 years old, and my grandfather plays your mandolim on saraus, playing old songs by 30´s or 40´s. I wanted play together them, but I was very small, and my grandfather gave me a rattle, for I feel inside the band ! HAHAHAHHAHAH... the years passed and I changed the rattle for one eletric guitar.

I have to absolutely agree. I have to admit that my guitar is the perfect boyfriend. It's where I leave it waiting for my return, it never cheats on me, it never complains, and it does give back as much as I put into it. Not a bad relationship....however my amp, well, it never sounds as good as I think it should, and its really heavy to carry around much like a ball and chain that you need for the guitar.

I've got a great acoustic guitar that I write with. No amp required. We take trips to a beautiful sunset quite often together and usually draw a small crowd.

Amply put Alex.
Beauty & the Beast.
Yet, with its(the amp) robotic/ serile nature, it can accentuate the beauty of the (guitar)sound, and make it ROAR

Alas, we must not forget the pick! For the pick is that which inspires the emotions of the guitar. From the light soft melodies to the heavy and hard anthems, and everything which may fall in between. Perhaps it is the faithful pick that may trump them both ?

Thanks everyone. These comments are really great to read!

At first, this felt like a bit of a risk to post. But now I see that a lot of you get it. In fact, you not only get it, you're adding to it and taking it somewhere new.

It's really cool to see this little creation inspiring further creativity. Similarly, this came out of me after I was reading a favorite writer of mine. She's someone I met recently at a book signing and the post I'm working on now is all about her and our meeting. Expect that soon.

One thing I forgot to mention- the guitar has to be touched. No touch, no sound. But you only touch amps out of necessity and as quickly as possible. Then you run away.

Alex

PS:

Re: photo- It is nice but I can't take credit for it.

Re: cello comment- that's hot.

Alex,
Not surprised when you say, “The guitar is the perfect mate”.
Constantly with you, the guitar has been there supporting your dreams and passions. A faithful companion as you journey through life’s peaks and valleys.

The guitar, as noted by Sorensongs, never cheats, complains, takes more then it’s given, breaks promises or walks away. It is loyal, giving, devoted, and understanding. All the qualities one searches for in a relationship.

It’s an instrument that brings expressions of love, hope, contentment and compassion into one’s life. Guitar music is capable of releasing sorrows, angers and pains from the heart; while simultaneously replacing these hurtful sentiments with feelings that lift the soul. Who would not want a friend or mate that can take away sadness and replace it with joy?

However, the guitar, as special as it is, does not have arms to hold someone. It does not have an unconditional heart beat that one can hear in the still of the night to know they are not alone.

The guitar may be the keeper of one’s heart. Perhaps, with a little trust, lots of love, mixed with some mutual respect and understanding the guitar could be persuaded to share a portion of one’s heart with something or someone just a precious.

Back to - Guitar vs Amps

Guitars are sexy! They come home with you. Amps come and go. They may get burnt out or overloaded. Amps sleep with roadies. Amps serve the guitar. The guitar uses the amp to get what it wants, when it wants. Amps are block heads.

Oh so very true. I remember when I got my first guitar that really looked nice (An LTD MH-250NT), after playing it for hours whilst in my bed, when it was time to go sleep, I put it on it's stand and just kept the light on and looked at it.

Now, I'm actually really excited about this pink (Yes, PINK!) flying V that I picked up used for less than what a Squire costs new. And today, I stripped off all the hardware, pickguard and everything, and I'm gonna mod the crap out of it, making this pretty wimpy-looking guitar into a growling beast, still keeping it pink! Hah.

Alex, you've probably made your rounds in Pickup-land, any ones you recommend? I'm thinking about DiMarzio, but I'd love to get your input! Thanks. :)

Good mates - different qualities/components by design and purpose. Both committed. Have a causal relationship. Amp, srong, supportive, duty- bound. Less organic than her mate, yet there for her. Is the guitar
role more female than male? Played in so many fashions.

Such a brilliant comment could only come from a brilliant mind.
Keep up the good work.

Hi Alex,
sorry if this isn't the right place to ask but I recently read that you will be releasing some instructional DVD's in the near future. My question is: What sort of material will you be covering in them?

Thanks!

I think almost any guitar player (including my best friend and myself) have woken up next to a guitar... ;)

I'm not sure though Alex, Guitars and Amps can be compared to say choosing a girlfriend/partner. Yes, a guitar can look awe-inspiring and you want to play it until you're no longer able to, much as if you see a sexually attractive woman, yes she looks stunning and you'd want to "play" with her until you no longer can however amps are like the girl who's looks are nothing special but it's what's inside that counts, an amp may look ugly in the face of a guitar but the sound that comes from inside an amp is more than often beautiful
