Post Your Social Awareness Links Here

You've all seen my rants about unrelated comments, especially those promoting some sort of link. However, I recognize that the links that were promoted (and consequently removed) so far on this blog, are socially relevant, even though they weren't relevant to the posts in which they appeared.

So here's what I've decided to do:

This post right here, will be the forum for these types of comments. Everyone is welcome to comment right here, in this section only, with your own links about issues. Keep in mind, this is to be limited to relevant, socially aware topics. No goofy YouTube humor etc...And as they say on TV, the views expressed in these links will not necessarily reflect the views of SkolNotes.

As always, everyone is encouraged to express themselves in the comments section as long as you stay on topic. Any spam, offensive material or otherwise unwelcome link, will be tossed (not too worried about that from this crowd, but have to say it).

So if you have a link about US or global politics, social injustice, the environment, government conspiracies or anything of that nature, you now have a place for it, by commenting to this post.

Below are a few socially aware links that I support. Check them out and feel free to post your own in the comment section. And thanks for supporting this blog and trying to raise social awareness.

I think that many people take every day that they have with good health for granted. Recently two people in my life, a coworker's six year old son, and my guitar teacher's six year old son were diagnosed with Leukemia. When I realized what these families go through every day and how this illness has impacted their lives and the lives of their children, its puts me in perspective. Here is a link to one of the family's blog about their son's illness. http://joshuagandy.blogspot.com

Don't take life and your health for granted. It's hard for a child to understand that all the painful things done to them are only to make them better. It's in my heart to somehow organize a benefit for these kids...if i only knew where to begin....

Alex, thanks for providing a space for this.
Sorensongs, I have some ideas of where to start with a benefit for these brave little kids. If you're interested please email me at mary.wemett@clarke.edu.

I have two websites that are near and dear to me. The first is the American Heart Association, http://www.americanheart.org My son had to have open heart surgery in December, 2007 and I spent a lot of time on this website. It helped tremendously....informing me, preparing me, keeping me somewhat sane. :) (He has had a full recovery and is playing baseball this year). The other is called Compassionate Friends, http://www.compassionatefriends.org and is for parents who have lost a child. The credo begins with 'We need not walk alone....Your pain becomes my pain, just as your hope becomes my hope...." I spent a lot of time on this website after the death of my oldest son 13 years ago, and I still go there from time to time.

My problem is I've tried to support too many issues and have spread myself thin in the past, now I try to only support a couple important ones, mostly animal/ocean related. (Irish....off the subject but cute dog in your pic)Bill Maher is one of my faves as well, he really put the swine flu into perspective a few weeks ago on his show when he said the regular flu has to go to rehab to get more popular again (when he was stating how many people die in a year from regular flu compared to swine flu which the media has gone bonkers about!). Rollins is one of the most socially aware people I know of in the public eye. He amazes me with how much travelling he does and just the watching of people/cultures he seems to do. He is one of my heroes...if I could only travel a tenth as much as he does....someday!

IMPORTANT: - Being well informed/independent thinkers is very relevant in these exciting yet challenging times. Fortunately, for now, many different sources still exist in which to stay informed. Unfortunately, too many stay uninformed or unaware. Good to share information and to listen to all sides of an issue. And, go outside the box(tv) realm to obtain information since much of the corporate-owned Media(fox news)
controls what they want us to know and think.
FYI -

Alex,
This is a perfect solution to the dilemma you’ve been facing. It appears the wisdom of the Skol is even mightier than the wrath. Everything has an appropriate time and place. Thanks for making the choice at this moment to offer this space.

Sorensongs, Like Irish, I am interested in helping you start a benefit for Joshua and his family. If you want to brainstorm a few ideas or just express your thoughts and get some feedback - you’re welcome to email me at naomik@cox.net.

Irish, My heart goes out to you. Not having children of my own; I can’t begin to imagine your loss, the worries you felt for your other son and the weight it placed on your heart. A parent should never have to endure these feelings. Websites, like the one you mentioned, are invaluable resources for information and support. They spot light the best of the web has to offer. I admire your strength and courage.

It’s great to get new sources for information. I’m trying to explore all the websites shared by everyone.

My soap box is random acts of kindness, children’s charities, along with food, clothing and shelter for those in need. I may not be able to change or save the world. However, I might be able to make a difference starting with just one person, family or organization. I tend to support local organizations. Two organizations I’ve recently become a supporter of are Acts of Kindness, http://www.a-o-k.org/, and Surfers Healing in RI - A Free Day Camp for Autistic Children.

It’s great to see everyone sharing.

Kind of weird.. I found an article I was going to post on one of the blog articles. Yet I felt (and knew it would be) off topic at the time... since I found this long after you wrote the sports articles. Came to Blogger and saw you posted up a spot for people to post unrelated things.

Anyway, I read this article and I was damn near in tears [saying a lot for me] but also thought about your views on sports and art.

We hear about the economy in the news every day. Most people have heard about how horrible Michigan is doing.. and this really put it into perspective. Instead of people dissing on Michigan - mainly Detroit/Flint - all the time how about looking at some of the better things we have. More specifically the people.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/the_bonus/01/07/detroit/2.html

I hope you, as well as others and hopefully any other Michigander out there enjoys this as much as I did.

Hi Alex and guys

Thank you Alex.
When I put that post and ask your help it was because you are a public figure, and by logical easier to pass the msg and reach the masses.
The kind of profile that I´ve made about yourself and the position you take on certain issues I knew I was making the right choice.
Despite having been unfortunate and have tried to find a reasonable explanation for you ignored and deleted the post, I could not find a reason for you taken this position.
I tought that you could be limited by your representatives and agents of the corporation that owns your right of image and artistic and can not take a position and alert the world about what is happening.
NOW I KNOW.

Today when I opened your blog,I was so pleased and happy that you have taken this position, that even If I already have you like an Idol,NOW I feel about you a genuine respect that only the people with great personality and individual character have.
If I sow you like an Idol now I know that beside you are one idol you are indeed a great lider to.

In this world there is no space for war anymore.
In this world there is no space for hunger and misery ANYMORE TO
When the animals begun to help eachothers more than humans, something is wrong.
The people who promote this wars, miserys, fundamentalisms, fanaticism are only a few but we aloud them to fullfild their will and impose it on the world.
We must get rid of them...fast, very fast.

The concept of making peace with war, is outdated and we must no longer let them catch us or anyone with this lie.
Peace can only be acheave with peace.....with true sentiments of peace.
peace is peace...peace cannot be impose...peace is a free state of mind, cannot be input on force.
I´m gonna provid here some links that manifests my opinion and to me they have some logic.

I to belive that the world is changing and myself as many others feel some tension in the air, unfortunly not in a positive vibe, but with the feel that we had allready been decieve with lies for so many years, that probably it will be a hard time.
So it´s time that we take advantage, even for brief moment becouse they allready sow that internet is knoledge and we allready know much that it was supose...and we are made to work, not to have knowlege.

I understand your feelings but i dont agree...and i dont agree becouse of this.
As i said, peace cannot be acheave with wars or fight, that´s what we have being doing for the last 5700 years...and besides that´s just what they´ve planning that we do and that is just right what they want to force a bigger police state on us..we must be smart and dont fall exacly in their plans.
WE MUST dont pick up in arms to kill brothers and sisters and when we acheave that position, the army will see in us the suport that they need to turn their back on their masters....it´s like a snowball...watch ghandi, that´s why he was so powerfull and that´s why they kill him.

There´s a book in internet but i dont know the link, it´s call

P.S- Take this book fast as you can becouse they are allways delete it.

Might not be the best space for this and it’s a little long; however, I’m going for it...

Sometimes, we make a difference in the world - one person at a time. Often times, we touch another person’s life and never know the influence or changes resulting from our encounter. For some reason, beyond our comprehension, it was meant to happen.

I just want to take a moment to thank Alex for writing this blog and to all who respond. In quiet ways – you’ve help me rediscover parts of myself that I have put aside for a long time. Alex, the example you set by following your heart, choosing to play different musical styles and overcoming stereotypes is powerful. It has encouraged me to make decisions regarding my own career path. For now, I’ve decided to work between two different worlds, a conservative financial environment and a holistic one. Definitely, a few stereotypes involved in this situation. By reading the responses posted by everyone, I found confidence to express a few thoughts myself. As a result, I started finding my voice again and being true to myself. Thank you!

Warrior, this goes out to you! - I really like your comments, especially the one about Testament’s show in Lisbon. Saturday we’re going to see them in Hartford, CT. Hopefully, my head will not be “destroyed”. I’m going to channel some of your love and enthusiasm for Alex to make my way to front of the stage. With your inspiration, I’m going to get there. Horns up my friend!

Alex, as I said to you – I believe in you as a person, the music you create and the way it resonates within people at different levels. This is just intuition – Lately, you may have found yourself in a situation or performing a song that you have played a thousand times before and while you’re in that “auto pilot zone” a new way of combining of notes or a great idea for a piece may have presented itself to you. Don’t feel that you have to multitask and try to hold everything in your head until you get a chance to capture it elsewhere. Just be aware of the concept/idea and let it go. The material will present itself to you again, at a more appropriate time. It’s in you – it’s part of you. You will not lose it.

Special thanks to all,
Naomi

Very cool of you all to post these links. There are some really good causes here. I confess not having enough time to look at all the links this week but will do so. And if some of them can help others, so much the better. Anything that creates more awareness is a positive thing.

Interestingly, the anonymous 'Save Troy Davis' guy, who's post is partly what inspired this, hasn't posted (maybe I scared him away, lol). Hey STD, no hard feelings. Here's the link:

Hopefully this will be a page that continues to be added to even when it get's pushed aside by more recent posts.

Speaking of that, new posts are in the works, I swear. Had a very busy week, six shows in a row plus hometown (NY area) show. But soon! Thanks again.

Warrior, Alex, and friends……

Warrior,
Please accept my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. After the show in CT, we quickly touched base in RI and then headed north to NH to visit family.

You got some serious mojo my friend!

Call it chance or fate; on the way into the show we met Alex. He told us about the great time had by all the night before in New York. I was happy to hear Alex had time to catch up with his friends during this busy tour. Sensing he needed to take care of few things before the show, we let Alex go and said we would see him inside.

The show was everything you described and more. Testament with Skolnick is unbeatable. I was there for Alex, but it was easy to get blown away by the total experience. There was only one row of people between us and the stage. We were in front of Alex, sandwiched between the rail and the pit. I think Alex was surprised to see us so close to the stage. As Testament played to destroy the place, the pit rumbled, and we held our ground. Someone was body surfing the pit. As they passed over our heads, my friend and I tried to keep him from falling to the ground. We got move aside. Security pulled they guy over the rail and some how - we got back to our spots! I looked up at Alex, and said, I’m going no where! It was awesome!

As the show ended, Alex and everyone from Testament tossed picks into the crowd. I wasn’t there for a pick or a picture. (As I said before – I was there to be supportive of Alex and his music. Of course, having a #$@%&#$# good time at a Testament show is a given. ) Anyway, he kind of had this look like – don’t you want a pick? So, I got into frenzy and tried to get a guitar pick. I did not get one, but my friend Joe, who has longer arms – did get catch a pick. He gave me the pick. It was Alex’s! Warrior, I want to send Alex’s guitar pick to you! Please email me your address and I will mail the pick to you in Portugal. My email address is naomik@cox.net I‘ll be watching for your email.

Thanks for the encouraging video. I want return the gesture and send one back to you all who respond to Skolnotes…..

Alex, I'm IN!--my soapbox platform, is one that runs near and dear to my heart, WATER~ and the way it used or misused, from the oceans towells, and also the hydropower. Farmers understand its' value and the losses, and the government does play a huge part, in the cleanliness standards to the funding and owning the rights to energy created and sold on the open market. Few of us know where to start, I offer these links for beginners: Waterkeeper magazine~ read every inch, learn about the simple choices that can change the world. "Its like water, or air you cant live without it"
www.waterkeeper.org

"Globally, the paper industry is the single largest industrial consumer of water and the third greatest emitter of greenhouse gases"

www.worldwatch.org

Because there really is only one green planet, one sky, one air and one source of life as we can use it , its the water.

the food we eat

the world we live in

PS: IF YOU CARE ENOUGH TO KNOW, TODAY ON NPR, I WAS STUNNED TO FIND OUT THAT MARKET WATCH IS UNDERWRITTEN BY "MONSTANTO CORP" WRITE www.npr.org and tell them we dont want the genetically altered food money, and the money from bankrupt farmers informing us of anything!, send your emails and make your voice known!

"have no fear for atomic energy, none of them can stop the time..."

oh ALEX--did you know that Chris Isaak in the beginning of many of his ( early) concerts, actually put a movie screen down and lectured the audience about the horror of alcohol and drugs! He would start off with images Elvis, and then he'd say, he died from drugs and alcohol, and how much HE hated them.....it wasnt exactly a moment any of us connected to. YOU KNOW-- that did not deter us, or the others from having a GOOD TIME!

People will only change when they have to, but its never too late to share our experiences with the youth, be honest, and tell your stories. Maybe they wont make the same mistakes as us.
