When I wrote the last post, I had no idea that over the course of the next couple days, I'd be in close proximity of Blackie Lawless. I also had no idea that my friend is his guitar tech, that WASP was on the bill for the next two shows, or that I'd end up on a three hour ferry ride with the whole band. Maybe it's time to start checking our itinerary.
We arrived in Kilefords, Sweden for the Rock Weekend Festival. After a quick workout and shower, I headed to the catering area, where I loaded up on Swedish salmon, artichoke soup and a variety of salads. This was such a feast, how come no one else is out here? I went to the table area, and it was empty except for Blackie, having lunch with his girlfriend of ten years, who has similar jet black hair. "Oh no." I thought. "I hope he hasn't read my blog." He looked over for a second, realized he didn't know me, and went back to his plate. I felt like I could have come up and say hello, but decided against it for now. On his way out, he recognized Chuck, our singer, who had just walked in, and gave him a quick hello and handshake. "At least he talks." I thought.
After lunch, I ran into Blackie's guitar tech Kyle, who is a friend of mind. I told him about this blog post. He laughed and confirmed that Blackie wants the dressing room areas cleared, that he'll throw a fit now and then and wants people kept away from him. "The guy prefers to be alone. It's true." He pointed out "But he's got my back and everyone else's that works for him."
One time, for example, there was a show where the crew wasn't fed. Blackie told the promoter to go to a Burger King right now and coming back with a dozen hamburgers or he wasn't going on. Kyle has worked for Blackie for five years and describes him as a "good boss."
Claudia, one of several young women in charge of coordination at the Norway Rock Festival the next day, told me that she was specifically instructed not to address Blackie directly. All correspondence and questions for him had to be done through someone else. I should point out that the rest of WASP went out of their way to say hello. Doug Blair, the guitarist, is my new buddy. We're already e-mailing each other.
I have to admit, when I saw WASP live, it was captivating. Blackie had a sense of dynamics and clarity that a lot musicians don't have, including some who play much more 'serious' and 'respectable ' music. This was especially true in the slower quieter moments of the show. Blackie believed every note he sang and played and it was coming from a real place. Doug and the rest of the band are great players and singers and the songs are extremely catchy.
On the other hand, I'm still not crazy about the music. I admit playing the role of 'snooty rock critic,' here and I respect that there are others who seem to feel differently. I've just never been a fan of that style of vocals. I like an occasional scream in my music, but don't like it when the song is sung in a scream, especially a high pitched one. WASP, Quiet Riot and a lot of lesser known LA metal bands had that sound and as a result, was never a fan of those bands.
I appreciate those on this blog who have defended W.A.S.P's music and tried to enlighten me too it. At one time, if you tried to tell me that KISS wasn't the greatest band on the planet, I would have ripped your face off. I have more appreciation after seeing the live show, but don't expect my jazz arrangement of a WASP song anytime soon.
Last night I spent three hours on a ferry with WASP. From about 12:30am to 3:30am, we all sat in a crowded lounge area, WASP at one set of tables Testament at another. Some of their band and crew would come over and hang with us, or we'd go over there and say hi, but usually Blackie never even looked around to see who was walking up. Finally I said to Kyle, "Can I say hello to him?
"Sure" he said." He introduced me. We walked over to his chair a few feet away. "Blackie, this is Alex Skolnick" he aid.
"How ya doing?'" Blackie said directly. I felt like we were interrupting him but didn't care. I asked how his show went. "Alright" he said. He asked how ours went.
It was a quick, curt and abrupt. No smile. Not overly friendly but not unpleasant either.
Here's my final assessment: just because someone is closed off and requires being closed off in order to function as an artist, doesn't mean he's a bad guy. Just not someone I and others I know would like to spend a lot of time with. We have some real characters in our world of hard rock/heavy metal. Part of what we do is add color to our fans lives. Some of us have higher needs in order to achieve that and that's ok or not, depending on your individual perspective and experience with that person.
I mentioned in my comment that I am fascinated by Blackie. I don't think I'm jealous of him as one person mentioned. I have no desire to be an aging LA Glam Metal singer. I'm quite happy in my role of someone who plays metal and jazz guitar, travels and writes. But sure, I admire that someone named Steven Duren was able to create this wild on-stage persona of Blackie Lawless.
The last band on the bill, Manowar, took half the dressing room area for themselves, forbid anyone from speaking to them and tried to limit the volume level on all the other bands so they could be louder. Suddenly, Blackie Lawless seems like a pussycat. That's another story...

Oh yeah, Manowar. Interesting characters. Their music used to be awesome but those guys... You say Blackie means it. Do Manowar mean it too? They are a bunch of morons but they have a really good singer and created awesome albums in the past. Apart from that, they contributed something to Metal. But that is no excuse for the behavior you describe.
By the way, I think WASP's music is pretty good, even though I like Testament way better ;-)

HI Alex.
Hello everybody.
I´ve never had been a fan of wasp,I never quite like this type of metal either.
Well,I do not know what to think... every sentence that Alex describes about people who still have to work, creating the illusion that 1 day, maybe some of us want to be like them, it really turn me confused.
I got to myself, that artists can create characters on top of the stage, but trying to create that character in the real world,or they are very stupid,or actually may be very frustrated.
I dont believe in dual personality, that to me is an excuse, and when someone have it,it shows that something is very wrong with them.
There was one post earlier,in which,Alex created A topic for we can put some links about ower positions and to warn others of a political, social or fraternal, awareness, dont know if you remenber...
I said that you were responsible for a part of my musical personality and in part i sow you like one idol but you deleted that post without having had shown social concern or any interest.
If you didnt created on the next post that kind of Tópic, you had been deleted from my list of people to consider, because in some way,I would have had about you,the same idea that you have on Blackie...this thinking has left me very sad.
Some people can create the illusion that they are superior beings but when we realized who they really are .. we feel like twats for 1 day we had wish to be like them.
uuurghhhhhh!!!
Big hugs to evrybody from the land of sunshine and keep doing what you love....smashing skulls with guitar notes yeahh
Ps-sorry about my grammar and errors, but,it´s very pure and came from the hart eheheh

Funny how the "has beens" ( eg: WASP / Manowar) still have that primadonna attitude.
I remember back in the 80s when rockstars were untouchable, unless you had a 44 double D size chest and red lipstick.
Most bands, now a days, appreciate their devoted fans and remember the fan is what puts the $$$ in their pockets.
I remember meeting You Alex back in the early 90s in Ithaca NY. I saw your band tattoo and walked up to introduce myself. Tapped you on the back. You had a more startled look than snob. We shook hands, watched a new band called White Zombie play and then Testament blew the doors off Max's.
The only thing now thats dissappoints me is a new trend, bands charging their fans for meet and greets. Elitism in a sense, but true capitalism, the American way...
Anyhow, I appreciate this blog you do Alex. It gives us fans a sense of being in the know without being in your personal business.
later
Manowar lowers the volume of other bands? Urban legends! haha...
I had an bad impression about Savatage years ago (1998), my ex-husband opens gig for them... I thougth Al Pitrelli very strange. Caffery and John l. are amazing guys! but Pitrelli no, He dont look at the peoples around the staff and the band too, he don´t smile, don´t have any expression on face. Nothing. I feel he out of energy with other guys from Savatage.
Sorry if he is your friend, maybe that day had a bad day for him.
Coin the phrase, ROCK N ROLL-- hense the latter, thankfully it wasn't heads... you still--ROCK.
A lawyer once said to me, that if no one is going to tell their point of view, stand for what they need to say, and just say it, then we are all worthless.
I can not wait to read the next issue...
I have really enjoyed this blog about Blackie....I pictured the whole story in my head as if I was there present! Thanks for all the visuals. I really liked the part where you thought he had read your blog about him, really funny! I have never been to a WASP show, but might check it out just to see what they are all about.
As far as the picture you posted of Blackie....did you sneak that shot of him as he walked by? If that is him now, that outfit is horrible! Thanks for this post & good luck with the rest of the tour! Hope to see more from you soon.
XO,
Elisabeth ;)
Interesting 2nd half. I like the fact that you're willing to admit that perhaps you misjudged Blackie up front, which is very humble of you, so kudos. Second, the whole Manowar thing is indeed a long running joke. Not Manowar's music (which I enjoy), but their "rock star syndrome" they seem to have been clinically diagnosed of. They're quite proud of being the "loudest bands on earth", which is in part probably what inspired the bit in "This Is Spinal Tap" about them being "one of England's loudest bands". In any event, Manowar still bring the house down when they play live, so give them credit for at least giving the fan their money's worth.
Be interesting to get Blackie's thoughts on all of this and what truly lies beneath his wheels of passion. A girlfriend of 10 years that tours with him is respectable. Think Alex needs to move on to a new topic of fascination.
Im sure ,,being in that business, Really changes you as a person,,Who knows what this man has seen,Or been through,I love there music, Im a new fan:),,As far as the girlfriend that tours with w.a.s.p,,Ive heard very rude stories about her also ,,But then again,Who knows.Ive talk with alot of people,That say Mr. Lawless is very kind to his fans. And really down to earth.
"I'm a wild child. Come and love me. I want youuuuu!" That's the first song I think of when I see Blackie's face. People like him have always intrigued me. What I have found out is sometimes they have less self esteem than seemingly quiet people like me have. Thanks for showing the cool backstage Blackie pick! He may possibly work out like I have to (judging from the clothes)...oh my, he's a real person too...I can hardly believe it. Stars like him are born perfect aren't they? ;)
Isn't it his fans, who, give him his strength, identity, self-worth, relevance, and purpose ? That, fuels his self importance, ego, popularity. If so, should he show a more softer and appreciative side to his fans then? Or, isn't he just living up to the image the fans attend to and he can't let it go- (heavy metallers are a little out there)
I mentioned in an earlier post that we all have bad days. But some of us just have a demeanor which is like a permanent bad day.
Yes, this really turned into a "Roger And Me" type story didn't it? (For anyone who doesn't know- it's Michael Moore's first movie, where he searches for the the head of General Motors to get a few words with him). Maybe I should have called this "Blackie & Me." lol.
Totally agreed. Time to move on. I think the post just published is about as far away from Blackie Lawless as possible. Thanks for the interesting dialogue and cheers from Budapest!
Hello Alex !
First, I would like to say that I have a total respect for your work in Testament and your jazz work, as well.
Don't worry, I'm not a Blackie fan !
I arrived on your blog because you were talking about Doug in your post about WASP. I was sure you would say good things about him. Also, I totally agree with your point of view about Chris Holmes in WASP. Have you seen Doug's customized guitars ? Did you enjoy his "saw guitar" ? Maybe he told you about the GuitarCross he created ? What do you think of it ? I'm glad you appreciate WASP's actual line-up. Do you have the full picture where Blackie is walking ? On it, there is Doug too but he has been cut, poor Doug ! :)
Greetings from Alsace ! ong live Testament !

does anyone know who is blackie lawless' girlfriend?
Is he married now? I can't imagine a guy who requires being closed off & prefers to be alone being married let alone having a girlfriend of 10 years.
