It's been said that your first hit of marijuana can lead to heroin addiction. Like most, I recognize this myth as a silly scare tactic, despite not being a big fan of pot or of potheads. But when it comes to chili pepper, it is true, at least in my case. My first hit turned me into a hot food junky.
I was eight years old and had simply grabbed a 'Spicy' V8 juice out of the fridge by mistake. The molten red liquid stung like a bee, searing my virgin tongue as if it was suddenly placed on a barbecue. Why would anyone willingly inflict this sort of pain on themselves?
I soon found myself sprinkling red pepper flakes on my pizza, dropping Tobasco sauce in my soups and adding chilled pepperoncini to my sandwiches. Within a few years, I was dipping chips into jalapeno salsa at Mexican taquerias, spooning Hunan chile sauce on my plate at Chinese restaurants, loading up on Korean spicy cabbage known as 'Kim Chee,' and indulging in Thai and Indian curries with extra hot sauce on the side. I was fortunate that Berkeley, with its large international community, had a lot of options for which to indulge my explorations of everything spicy.
As I'd later experience with my first sip of scotch and my first oyster, stumbling upon something you'll one day love often begins with an unpleasant first step. This first step plants a seed, in this case a capsicum seed, which blossoms into a passionate plant of obsession. So what is it about hot food that keeps adventurous eaters such as myself coming back again and again to challenge ourselves, sometimes to the point of regret on the part of our stomachs?
The answer may be found in extreme music, such as heavy metal, hip hop, punk, avant garde jazz and twelve tone classical. These forms take you out of the so called 'normal' frame of reference and put you in a place of excitement, where you can step away from what is considered 'safe.' Here, in this elevated zone of heightened sensory awareness, you become independent from the mainstream. In much the same way, hot food lies outside of the realm of blandness embodied by tuna salad, meatloaf, Wonder Bread, Campbell's Soup and others items so commonly accepted in American homes.
Like an intense live concert, a spicy meal may leave you feeling beat up and worn out. But you also realize you have lived a little bit fuller as a result and are glad you did. And as soon as you recover, you find you are better for the experience and look forward to more.
In part II, we'll look at a special restaurant I visited in Japan a few days ago, whose deadly 'spicy ramen' inspired this post. It was delicious, painful and the hottest meal I've ever had...

hhaha. youre right. about the adventure
thereve been times ive turned down spicy food . hm. maybe i was just feeling boring!!
the times ive done the extremestuff. (which is about like only 4)
it was most definitely a time of fun.(id be like narrating my spice status to my mom while eating her meals)
(ps. pepper flakes played a big role in how my mom met my stepdad.)
I'm getting hungry for my favorite Mexican restaurant reading this post, Mmmmmmmm!
Hhhhmmmmm, spicy food.......
i got my spicy food addiction living in New Orleans in the 80's - not only tabasco sauce but also we used to shop for weird hot spices in the French Market in the Quarter. My son also gave me a pepper grinder for my birthday. Can't wait to hear about the spicy ramen in Japan. Keep up the good blog alex!!
Spicy ramen looks really good ! In Japan they also have that 'orange/red' spicy powder called 'Shichimi'(七味). It means 'seven flavours' and it's a mix of 7 spices like peppers, ...
I once ate a large Japanese rice cracker covered with Shichimi and my mouth was on fire !
Glad to see there ARE hot food junkies out there... thought it was another weird quirk of mine...
My uncle owns an Indian restaurant (he's east Indian).. so that's like spicy food galore for me. Plus being Hungarian I have a knack for loving hot peppers... and perhaps I was built with an iron stomach or something, I've never had my stomach regret anything that went into it. Mmm... :D
Spicy ramen sounds interesting...
Did you enjoy Japan and a spicy ramen ?
I love this kind of ramen !!
Maybe, is this "Tanmen" ?
Um...I become hungry :)
But, Alex, Your show at Kawasaki and Nagoya, Japan was much hotter than "Tanmen" !!
Did you enjoy japanese "Royal milk tea" as last year ? (^_-)
Another brilliant post.
I'm also addicted to hot food. I guess I started very early on because my father is from India so it's in my blood.
Have you ever tried Lamb Vindaloo? It's a very hot, delicious Indian dish. Everytime I go to an Indian restaurant I always ask for extra hot because hot is just mild for me.
I hope you enjoyed your tour in Japan, it's a great country with great people, very polite.
taste activated,
food accentuated,
some like it hot,
they like it alot,
like music and friends,
stimulate me
and make senses go,
beyond ordinary limits,
shake me -
(btw, there are properties of capsicum that are known to benefit and treat joint pain and arthritis)
Hello,
The best food in the world is Indian, the second is Japanese. Everytime I travel abroad I always eat in local restaurants with local food.
If you love good Indian food you MUST try "Punjab" in Neal Street (close to covent garden), London, England - it's the best Indian restaurant in London.
Kind regards
Arrrggghhh ... The burning sensation of the tongue makes it sound like my head will explode, I want to drink more and more water, juice, soda, wine ....
Pepper as seasoning for dishes yes, but only in powder form, enhancing the flavor of the main food. But only slightly, no very much.
Sorry, I prefer tuna with salad!!!! olive... I love olive in potatos and cheese on beans.
I am a fearless food fan and always have jazz going on in the background.
I think cooking is analogous to jazz. Deciding how you're going to accent your chili is like deciding on the tempo - and which instrument to highlight.
Chilies are so complex - the way the interact with tomatoes, onions (Mexican), coconut milk and lemon grass (Thai), curry & masala (Indian) - and yet all get their kick from the same genus of chili.
That is a great Red hot Chili photo--
Spicey food, yes!! ((Like will Farrel in Elf, YES!!))
Indiam Lamb curry---mmmm, Hunan, Pho,
and THAI...
I hope you have even at
plearn Thai Restaurant
1923 University Ave
Berkeley, CA 94709
, it was right next to the Keystone in Berkeley-- best spicey Thai chicken ever..then it moved next to the theater...( my mouth is watering..)once my Father actually forgot his wallet there!! and they let us pay later--they were so cute, "We know you, you come here a lot-- you pay later" of course we did.
I have a great recipe for fish soup, it's perfect for anyone who likes to cook, Thai style. For us we like the rich coconut sauce with HOT--green curry,crunchy-snow peas- The aromatics of the lemon grass, ginger and green onions are healing, and we use tender-little scallops or savory-Salmon, served with clear-rice noodles. Comfort food.
We dont do ghost peppers, or Dave's Insanity-hot sauce, but if you are seriously into hot, that's a great gift! Man vs. Food has some halarious food shows on "the hot", where he tries a ghost pepper! ( notso- comfort food!)
This year I just kept picking my neighbors fresh jalapenos and making all sorts of yummy, rice and tacos, that is the way to go!lol
??Japanese food--well--that was the only time, I ever thought, this, is too hot, in SF , it was like fire!! Did you survive--??
..and speaking of the dreaded-"pot head" and peppers this usualy does the trick if your on drugs, this will scare you to death!, pepperland....have fun!

LOL
This post made me hungry. (smiles) (I think I'll go to Chipotle's for the Burrito bowl w/Barbacoa meet (spicy & hot), black beans & rice, lots of sour cream, fresh tomato salsa, mild green sauce, lots of cheese, guacamole, and lettuce- with a Corona w/lime. Now THAT'S a pothead's dream.
Seriously, though, I know what you mean about hot spicy food. I tend to respice food, much to the annoyance of friends who've made special meals for me. The cool thing about hot sauces in general is the obscure ways we use them. What's one of your weird creations with it, Alex? Since I was a kid in grade school I've loved hotsauce on cheese popcorn. (Don't ask). I recall a favorite kid candy spot in the morning before school used to actually open the bags of popcorn and add the sauce for us for a few extra pennies. I can recall many times showing up to class sitting in the back unable to speak, as my tongue and lips had gone numb from the spicy hotness. And there's nothing like the sweet spicy flavor of Thai curry. One of my favorite spots here in NYC is Thai Village, a door or two down from The Blue Note. I make a dish with Chipotle peppers that are so hot,I have to wear gloves. The minute I open the can my eyes start to burn, but oh the smell. Hell hath no fury, like an open can of Chipotles in Adobo Sauce.
In defense of potheads, though, it's 2009 Alex, time to be politcally correct. (smiles). Secretaries are now Administrative Assistants, garbage men are now Refuse technicians. So, I'm thinking potheads should now be called... Herbal Specialists. It takes away from the slouch mentality/impression. Leans more towards functionality. (Yeah, I know, ... THAT'S the crap potheads come up with, right?) LMAO
A man can try many things. But I think it is always useful to keep balance, so called golden mean. If the man fall from one extreme to the another extreme, it can always cause problems. If man follows the golden mean, then everything will be fine. For example known fact that high-quality, natural wine has curative properties, but if it is drunk in moderation.
I miss spicy stuff. Having kids did me in and I can't handle it anymore. But man, it was good while it lasted.
I LOVE spicy food!!!
Yes, I have that "Shichimi" in my house.
I found a picture. A Japanese crew took that picture at backstage, maybe. There is your T-shirts :)

Hello Alex,
I love chili and spicy food very much.
(2 kinds of chili peppers are growing in our garden)
The appetizing photo made me go to a korean restaurant yesterday.
I had a spicy ramen!
Hope you didn't get any problems after the hottest ramen...
I like spicy food. I don't eat it that often, but when I go to my favorite Mexican restaurant, I always get something spicy. I didn't really like spicy food until I started eating Mexican food. My favorite is the steak and onion burrito with salsa verde. I love it.
Ok, now reaching for the Thai takeout menu place close by for feeling Hot Hot Hot....
Good to have a little 'hot' support group here. Not there's anything wrong with the bland foods I mentioned, they're just usually not for me. Except the day after eating something like that spicy ramen. And I like tuna, as long as I can put a little hot sauce on it and ( nearly) everything else.
As far as pot, that's a great topic for a future post! I feel there's a huge difference between one who 'smokes pot' in moderation and a 'pothead." However, growing up in Berkeley, and being in the music world, locally and nationally, let's put it this way: I'm over potheads.
More on this soon. Thanks everyone!
Alex,
I don’t know what scares me more; the bowl of fire or the box of tissue next to it.
The scene reminds me of the time my friends show up with hot wings. Said if they were going to indulge my love of metal, then I had to embrace their love of spicy foods. I looked over and saw a takeout container of hot wings. Next to the container were several plastic gloves. They said the gloves were to keep your fingers from burning. Fingers! Yeah, I thought, what about my lips? The wings turned out to be really good and I was hooked. Hope the same was true for your bowl of noodles.
My friends are introducing me to hotter concoctions and moving me up the Scoville scale. Perhaps there’s a ghost pepper in my future. In return, I’m escalating them up the decibel and Richter scales with some metal music. Have to wonder - which scale will top out first?
Wishing you a happy birthday. I hope you're somewhere fun - and you have a chance to enjoy the celebration.
Hey Alex, I want to wish you a happy birthday. Anyway, I am somebody of broad tastes. I like to try new food whenever I can. If I continue to eat the same foods perennially, then life begins to become generic. In a world of excess standardization, it is necessary to add culture and diversity to it to offset the growing curse of the bland. I enjoy spicy food a lot, especially jambalaya! Both of us are lucky, Alex! We both live in the NYC area and we are able to experience the best restaurants in the world! I been to many great ones, Alex. I am glad you take time to write your thoughts about a broad diversity of subjects. I seriously should tell my AP Language about your blog, she would dig this. Alex, I am looking forward to hearing about your experience in the Japanese restaurant.

off topic: just a quick Happy Birthday Alex.
Hope it is a good one and we ( the fans) are glad you exist Bro.
cya
Cool post, I'm too much of a sissy to handle hot food though. :P
And happy birthday Alex! I guess this is a really awesome day, since both my mom and you were born on this day. ;) I love your playing dude! :)
Though I do have a kind of love-hate mix towards it, seeing as there are a bunch of awesome music from both Testament and AST I want to be able to play, but it's just way beyond me. :P You're just too good. ;)
Just saw on Facebook it's your birthday. Happy Birthday!!
Greetings from Germany!
09/29 - day of the charged reactor-
maybe that is why you prefer hot food - dynamic and intense -like your playing - followed by some relaxation. Hope you had a Good Birthday -
Some of the hot food addiction stuff is hereditary as well. My mother craved Mexican food a LOT when I was in the womb, and thus I have a deep love for Mexican food, and a love for spicy food as well. I know of others who have similar addictions to chocolate or other foods that were likely born (no pun intended) from their mother's cravings while pregnant.
Hi Alex, great blog. I too am a capsaicin junkie. Also a musician and writer. Nettie Hartsock recommended your blog. I'm adding you to my blogroll. Perhaps you will enjoy mine, too.
Cheers!
Jesse
