New York Times

I'm thrilled to announce a story in today's New York Times, an article entitled A Scorpion From Iraq Trying to Sting in America. Its a review of a gig earlier this week, the first official show by Acrassicauda, Iraq's heavy metal band, now living as refugees in the US and whose upcoming EP I produced. It'll be released March 9th.

Times music writer Ben Ratliff, who is equally comfortable reviewing jazz and metal (my kind of guy), did a wonderful job reviewing the show and telling the story of my involvement with the band.

A couple small additions: it was actually a very socially aware friend, Nettie Hartsock, who first told me about the film "Heavy Metal In Baghdad." My parents had mentioned hearing of the film on NPR when I'd mentioned it to them. My point in relaying this story was that people like my parents, up on current events and politics, NPR listeners etc...had heard of the band, but not many metal fans or media organizations. I was determined to help change that. Also, I still play with the band Testament, as well as being 'once' of the band. Finally, there is a significance to the end of the story. When I said "Welcome to America," it was not only fitting for the moment, but that's also what James Hetfield wrote on the back of the ESP Guitar he handed to the band, which made it funnier to us. I might have forgotten to explain that to Ben backstage at the gig.

I want to thank Mr. Ratliff for this article. It's been an amazing experience working with this band and I'm honored to be sharing a story with them in the New York Times.

Congratulations to the guys, I did not know that they are refugees, I thought they just want to start a new life in America, believing in their talent. As a immigrant.

After 11/09, America has become more difficult for all foreigners, WTC was a reference point of the economic world and, like it or not, when you touch a point of diplomacy between countries affects all civilians too. I imagine that some American Orthodox - do not know if this would be the best word, but let's say that´s "orthodox" is right word - looked at with bad face for them because they were foreigners from Iraq. And this is give more power for them continue to play their music !!!! After all problems, war, censured, etc... in own country.

You saying: "welcome America" and producing them, was do your part, believing and helping good peoples, that dont have NOTHING with terrorism, and only want live their lives.

Congratulations to both you and the band! I accept that I am probably hopelessly naïve and unrealistic, but I like to think of Acrassicauda as a reminder of the “land of opportunity” dreams that America still holds for some. Refugees achieving a better life and finding creative freedom is, well, a nice thought for me as I start a Friday morning U.S. History class.

Hopefully, Acrassicauda has found an end to oppression and deliverance into something better in the USA, where, they can continue to sting. And, to be helped along by Alex, someone so credible and gifted deserves expression in such a credibly hip place -nytimes, Congrats -best to all of you along your journey -

That's great! I'm glad you believe in them so much that you are helping them at this level. They sound really good. I'm glad they are starting a new life in the U.S. and I hope they are finding good friends in the large Middle Eastern community here in the NYC area (besides good friends of all kinds!)

Alex...;)

You are indeed a person with a heart enlightened by love.

Supposing ... just supposing that even if the Acrassicauda are not a band that's worth with just the push that you gave, that alone is a help that many bands would only dream.

In addition, the videos I saw with the guys, they deserve it, they are good people and any kind of life they will have in the U.S.A, should always be better than the Irak, even knowing that our country is always our Country .

Good Alex .... sharing the love you have for your life and the lives of others.

5 stars.

And you didn’t want to be the "Bono of Metal"...

Don’t open a can of whop ass on me for the comment. Just trying to be a little playful and tease you about a comment you made a while ago. I just found it very amusing at the time and for some reason remembered it.

It’s wonderful what you have given to Acrassicauda. May this continue to be a great opportunity for both you and Acrassicauda.
