Nashville

I've decided to revamp this story and make it just about Nashville. There are photos and video added. The Guitar Player story is it's own post now.

Hi everyone- sorry to disappear! The AS Trio is on tour with my good friends, instrumental superstars Rodrigo Y Gabriela. It's been an amazing experience performing to thousands each night with AST then sitting in with RyG during their set. Yesterday we played the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

Earlier in the day, Rodrigo and I went on a guitar outing. First we hit the Gibson custom shop. The folks working there were very gracious, some of them confessed to being fans and none of them seemed to mind that I endorse Heritage, a company their bosses have had their differences with. He bought a Les Paul (his first) from the retail shop.

Later, we hit Gruen Guitars, Nashville's famous guitar store (anyone remember them from that old Visa ad?). I've always wanted a great tele and I found a vintage blonde beauty. Did I need to spend $2500 on a guitar? No! But encouraged by my inner voice (and Rod, who'd just spent more than that on his Gibson), I went for it. What better place to get one? And how often do you get the chance to debut it on the same stage where the ghosts of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and countess other legends can still be felt, their pictures surrounding the backstage? The crowd loved it when I told the story and used it for the slide guitar romp of our trio tune 'Western Sabbath Stomp.' It was a great day in Nashville. (Photo's: Rod at Gibson and me showing Gab the tele backstage)

When I posted this the first time, I'd forgotten to mention that the night before, we'd stumbled into a bar and heard an incredible group, the Don Kelly Band (pictured above). Their guitarist, JD Silo, is a quintessential Nashville tele player. Quite honestly, I can't remember the last time I've heard someone who so represents everything that is great about the guitar. Seeing him certainly helped enhance and inspire the whole Nashville
Telecaster experience. If you're ever down in Nashville, drop by Robert's on Broadway, where he can be heard several nights a week. Here's a clip I found on YouTube.

The only downside to this tour is that it's been really hard to write. However, I have managed to finish a piece which appears courtesy of Guitar Player Magazine, where I've brought aboard as a guest blogger. You'll be seeing more of my guitar-centric pieces over there, but we'll always have announcements links here on Skolnotes.

I sure hope you're enjoying your new acquisition. There's nothing wrong in spending $2500 on a guitar, in fact, I truly believe that a good quality instrument can inspire you and can make one sound better.

I remember the Gibson showcase in Nashville. Great place. I also remember taking a Les Paul and starting to play it with trembling hands and moist eyes. Gotta start looking for those pictures.

You see, I can sort of relate to your story but I don't believe I'd spend such a chunk of change on a guitar. But on the other hand, I'm no professional player ;-)

Greetings from Germany!

I understand that if you´re endorser, you have contract issues, and no always seems speak about other brands, i also knows that have different types of endorser, since the guy that receive the series instrument until you sit with luthier and make your personal, signature, etc... but i agree with Claudia, dont have any problem to spend 2500$ !!!! - I think that if i has 2500 also buy a good guitar Be endorser or not!.

About your other blog and post : for me still necessary be different and open mind, for you be "a real guitar player " because all music are complete itself. Maybe I say here one thing that you and others disagree or not, but today marketing is for you "to sell" something that company have. They dont search for talent, they create a "talent". Maybe because this , don´t have more genius or diversity as in 60´,70´,80´. All is tecnology and "more of same".

And of course, I can´t wait to listen your AST album.

Entertaining as always! I feel the same way about those old issues of Guitar Player from the 80's.

I hope you will dedicate one of your columns to a detailed account about how and what you used to practice in order to get to the level you're at now. Specially for us guitar players that put in a lot of practice time, but seem to be stuck :-(

...and like the magazines that you found, or found you, the Nashville acquisition....a 'priceless' souvenir, with embedded memory, reflection, stamped on place of meeting, where musical heart and prowess and legends abound. And, where you would have felt cheated had you walked away without claim.
Hope you made ...."sweet Georgia on down the road".. and thanks for checkin in down the line"

Hello Alex,
A good guitar is always expensive. Anybody that has tried/played a cheap guitar and an expensive one, can tell and appreciate the difference in sound.
In cheap guitars, changing the pickups (to a set of good ones of course!) makes a big difference, but that's not all. Just as an example: it still doesn't make the notes sound equally good on all strings and frets.
In contrast, in expensive instruments, all the notes sound great in all the stings and frets. Plus the good quality of woods, varnish, materials , etc... all add to the tonal and sound quality of the instrument.
So, if one can afford a high quality instrument, why not buy it?
Kind regards

The Ryman Auditorium is an amazing venue, what an honor to play there!!

And the new tele is not only your passion, but an investment in your career, so good on you.

I hope the rest of the tour is as unforgettable as your time in Nashville.

Nashville is a fun town. I used to go there a lot when I was living in Clarksville. Sorry I missed your show in Atlanta. Hopefully you'll get a chance to return here soon.
