- I joined the San Francisco Bay Area metal band Testament when I was sixteen. In 1992, at age twenty three, I left the band in a quest for new experiences, personal growth and artistic fulfillment. A few years later, I moved to the great art and culture center New York City, where I earned a university degree and began a new career focused on jazz. My metal life was far behind me. Or was it? Fast forward to the present: Testament is back. A reunion tour has led to a new album, rave reviews, awards and spots on this years top metal tours and festivals. Things are going better than ever, but of course, there are going to be challenges. Can the band and crew put all the past issues behind us? Will we rise to new levels of success and how will we handle it? And how will the worldly, educated person I've become coexist with the return of my inner metal dude? This blog will be the source of my observations, stories, spontaneous thoughts and whatever else spills forth as I live through this really interesting time of my life.

Great article Alex. My experience was similar...My grandparents gave me an electric guitar for Christmas in 1981 and I remember walking through a Wal-Mart store in Hot Springs Arkansas. I passed by the magazine rack and saw a magazine called "Guitar World" in the rack. Just so happens, it was their 3rd issue with EVH on the cover. I had no idea magazines about guitars existed. I took it home, probably read it 975 times, and have been hooked ever since.

Hey great post! I myself "stumbled" onto a little stash of old Guitar Player Magazines a few years back when I was cleaning out a practice spot for some band at work. Granted they weren't a treasure trove of material like the ones you mention, but they are still good. Although I do own "The Guitar Player Book", that they put out to celebrate their 40th year, in case you haven't seen it; its really neat. Interviews with tons of players crossing all genres from over the years, complete with their lessons and tips.
I'm more of a Guitar World guy myself, but I wish that they would be more consistent and I guess the word would be classy, as Guitar Player. I enjoy more of how guitars players actually talk about playing/gear in Guitar Player than some of the other stuff that they talk about in Guitar World.

I really enjoyed reading your blog. I've been reading the Guitar Player on and off since I was 16. I also wondered who were these guitar players that were featured that I never heard from. It inspired me to find out and there was no turning back. I still pick up an issue from time to time and it's still a great read. I hope you are featured on the cover one day.
