Here's my second blog for Guitar Player Magazine. It's about guitar players who are their own worst enemy, (kind of like the guy at the right), entitled
"How To Lose Your Envy And Become Your Own Best Guitar Player"

Great blog!! So true. The whole "Lady Gaga's malnourished twin on a bad hair day." made me laugh a bit. =P
I remember hearing Bob Seger doing an interview and he said something that has always stuck out to me, "If you want to advance yourself, you have to write your own music." Instead of like you said, being exactly like another artist.
Also, GID as you put it, drives me up a frickin wall. So many artists of all types, especially my age I've noticed, are like that. It really discourages me from playing with them, and it's been a reason I haven't played permanently with a few bands. I'm probably on the opposite end of that spectrum (probably not always in the best way either) but pretty timid when it comes to playing. I've almost preferred doing solo projects or just working with one other person, less room for all that mess. ;)
Great blog, as always.

I agree with the big part that you writed, meanwhile this type (GID) help you, because dont have right without wrong, dont have light without darkness. I as guitarrist, make my the best, into my best and my limits. And think that same with this limits, I still play what I feel!
I agree, principally with this part: "... you should never try to play just like them either. You must forge your own path..." . When you are focused on your way dont have time to be other people.
I learned in music that "favorite guitar players are to be appreciated, never copied"
Awesome entry Alex! You know, it's funny, just a week ago I was feeling extremely down about my playing, I had that "Fuck this, I can't play 10% as well as Alex Skolnick or Jason Becker could at my age (19) !" But then I remembered something I read in a Joe Satriani-interview, that compliments on his chops did rather little for him compared to compliments regarding his music, that chops really only work for being able to play music with, which really opened my eyes. In the end, I think, that if you do something you don't really want to do just because others are doing it, you'll probably end up looking back at it in regret. I guess all that matters is knowing what you want to do and working towards that.
My two cents. :)
Thanks for comments so far. This seems to be circulating through the internet quickly. I guess a lot seem to relate to it. Together, we can wipe out this debilitating condition of GID... ; )
Here GID have other sign: LCG (little cock gang). I don´t resisted and searched options on Youtube to “Betcha can´t play this” .Results: about 2,250 !!!!!! rs
Good points. Read "the Artist's Way" way back. Good points there about acheiving higher creativity. A process full of steps that may include envy on some level. The creative force is unique to each. When you find your own truth you will reveal your creative soul energy and can make one great art form. Let go and have an open outcome vision where you can find, refine and make your own unique way far from envy, which you have done so well Alex.
Thank you for the great blog.
I always enjoy reading your interesting blog.
P.S.
What a pity!I couldn't go to the special AST concert with RyG as I had been in Far East. lol
A few years ago, I was telling a friend how great Tom G. Warrior was & how nobody...no matter how great they were...would EVER be able to play like he did in Hellhammer. I'm talking nuances, slurred technique...everything. The point is, it doesn't matter how technically proficient you are...if you can WRITE something as pure & real as Lightning Hopkins, Al Di Meola, Chick Corea or Bjork then you have an untouchable voice. There are people that will run circles around ALL of us (technically) but ultimately, it comes down to the music/soul. Great blog! :o)
