The Talkhouse/Dianne Reeves

My first post of '14 appears courtesy of The Talkhouse, a unique online music journal, which has the following self-description: "Smart, distinguished musicians from all genres and generations writing about the latest releases." It's an honor and humbling to be among such distinguished and diverse company as techno-vegan Moby, trailblazing jazz pianist/Harvard Genius Grant recipient Vijay Iyer, Slipknot Screamer Corey Taylor (whose artistry extends far beyond his image) and numerous others.

Curiously, my two favorite reviews on the site are by artists who are the last anyone would expect to cover the genre of hip-hop. One is by late legend and misunderstood Metallica collaborator Lou Reed, whose review of Kanye West's Yeezus is a work of art unto itself, and the other is by Lamb of God vocalist (full disclosure: a close friend), whose review of Pusha T, an artist I was unfamiliar with, is not only surprisingly heartfelt but unpredictably illuminating - of the writer and the subject.

As it turned out, my favorite living jazz singer (maybe singer period), Dianne Reeves, had a new album coming out just in time for my deadline. Today, she became a follower of mine on Twitter and exchanged some nice messages back and forth (full disclosure #2: I don't get starstruck very often but I'm on Cloud Nine right now). I'm gathering she approves of the review (critiques and all). Please enjoy my review of Dianne's latest album, Beautiful Life.

PS It was this TV appearance by Dianne that first drew me in:

  1. A well thought out review from someone who understands and appreciates the medium and talent, and true gift. One like hers that has a gravitational pull on the listener when they sing. I remember that show and really missed it when it stopped airing (due to sponsors from what I heard). I liked the informal format and the music, especially performances like this one you've shared, that showcases pure talent of the voice as an amazing instrument, a natural force that draws the listener into hear with feel.

  2. Nice review. The idea "music by musicians" is always attractive, permit that you make a "trip" in yourself influence. but of course that she's nice, she's a "reeve" ! HAHAHAHAHAH
, just kiding, I received some feeds in my mailbox, and last weeks the name of her appear, for some questions (time) dont read all, so dont know her yet, but Lubanbo yes, because already played in some concerts at Rio (he born there, me too) and did partner with one of my favs Cesar camargo Mariano.

Particulary i prefer jazz played not singed, for me is more universal, without lirics.

  3. You pulled off the near-impossible: painting an intricate aural picture with words. No wonder she loved it! And by the way, whoever said "never meet your heroes" obviously never had one follow them on Twitter ;)
